My Friend, My Hero
My Friend, My Hero

A hero is someone you look up to, does nice things for other people and is courageous. My hero is Grace McDonald. Grace has Down syndrome. Although she has a disability, she is an amazing girl who works past her hardships and strives to make people smile. Grace is my hero because she is courageous, inspiring and helpful. Grace has many wonderful characteristics. She is courageous because she is not afraid to speak her mind, although she may have trouble, and she is not afraid to try new things. For example, last year our friend Sadye Boshak did a "Walk for Down Syndrome", and Grace got up in front of the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth graders and did a speech without fear. She also swims in the Special Olympics without a quiver, she may have won many medals, but she isn't in it to win, she does it because she loves it, works hard at it and feels confident whether or not she wins. Grace is inspiring because of the way she works past her hardships, in and outside of school. For example, some hardships for her are to read and write, say her words, and express her mind, but she is still amazing in her own way, even if she has difficulties with some things. When she struggles, she may want to give up, but she gets back to her schoolwork and succeeds. Grace has influenced me through the years that I have known her because she never goes up and tries to do her best. Another example is she stays, even when other students are talking around her, also when others stare at her, she doesn't care what they think of her, she is her own person and keeps her head high and ignores it. Lastly, Grace is helpful because she supports her friends and goes out of her way to make people smile. For example, she is always there to give warm hugs, and kind words. Another example is when I moved to North Caldwell. On many kindergarten days of the year, I didn't ever want to go into the classroom and Grace would always be there and say, "Come on Katie, you can come in with me." I went in with her and everything would be fine. My hero is Grace McDonald; she is courageous, inspiring, and helpful. There are many other great characteristics about Grace, but these three really show her wonderful personality. Grace is a one-of-a-kind girl that I would never be able to replace in my life. She is not only my greatest friend but she is my hero.

Grace is one of my bestest friends and she is an inspiring hero! She has been my best friend since Pre-School when we were 3 yrs old! She makes everyone laugh and smile with her funny jokes and always wants people happy. She makes tears ago with just one big smile! Im proud to know her and to be her best friend. Without her I dont know if I would be the person who I am. BTW: AMAZING ESSAY BY KATIE!

Katie, this is an amazing essay! Grace's confidence, kindness and positive attitude is inspirational - it's no surprise that she is your hero. And your loyalty and ability to appreciate every aspect of your friendship is commendable. You are both so fortunate to know one another. Thanks for sharing your story. -Marc
