NDSS Statement on comments made by Peter Schiff on The Daily Show

The National Down Syndrome Society (@NDSS) does not agree with the sentiment that Mr. Peter Schiff used on The Daily Show last night (Jan. 28, 2014). People with Down syndrome and other disabilities are achieving more than ever before and are leading productive lives by seeking meaningful and competitive employment. We invite Mr. Schiff to learn more about what people with Down syndrome are doing and how they are contributing in society. Our organization strongly condemns the use of the word "retard" in any derogatory or inappropriate context.

NDSS would welcome the opportunity to appear on Schiff's radio show, @Schiffradio, to talk about the accomplishments and achievements of people with Down syndrome in today's society. Our organization envisions a world in which people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations and become valued members of welcoming communities. #NDSSonSchiffRadio
